Mother’s Day in Antwerp
In Antwerp, we like to do things a little differently. Here, Mother’s Day isn’t celebrated in May, but on August 15th. Why? We’re happy to explain.
It all started with a pamphlet. In 1913, Frans Van Kuyck, an influential liberal alderman, launched the idea of celebrating Mother’s Day on August 15th, the day of the Assumption of Mary. This is the “holiday” of Mary, the mother of Jesus and, since 1124, the patron saint of our city. (The Cathedral of Our Lady is also dedicated to Mary.) Van Kuyck wanted to highlight the indispensable role of mothers within the family and society.
Mother’s Day as a counterbalance to modernization
Van Kuyck saw Mother’s Day as the perfect answer to the challenges of the early 20th century. He aimed to strengthen family bonds and restore social order by prominently honoring mothers. With the help of schools, the press, and even a proper propaganda committee, Mother’s Day in Antwerp became a resounding success. The local businesses jumped on the bandwagon with various special offers and gifts. And the people of Antwerp? They were only too happy to participate.
Mother’s Day in Antwerp vs. the rest of the world
While the rest of Belgium and many other countries eventually adopted the American tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May—a national holiday established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914—Antwerp remains loyal to the August 15th date. This is a beautiful example of the distinctiveness that characterizes our city and also a testament to our deep connection with our history.
Rubens Market on Mother’s Day
Since the 1970s, Mother’s Day in Antwerp has been further colored by the Rubens Market. Every year on August 15th, Antwerp transforms into a 17th-century spectacle with more than two hundred market vendors. In historical outfits, they offer products from early morning: drinks, snacks, antiques, flowers, and much more.
